How to work with variants

Product data can contain variants such as color, size, or other attributes and their combinations. Each variant can contain product information such as descriptions or digital assets. This data can be selected from the set of data assigned to the product card.

Working with Variants

Open the variant card

  1. Choose the search icon (Alt+Q) and enter Items.
  2. Select an item and open the Item Card.
  3. Choose the search icon (Alt+Q) and enter Variants.
  4. The Item Variants page opens.

Define your own variants

In this example, assume that you already have an item that is fully configured and has all required product data attached. On the Item Variants page, there is one product variant per line.

  1. Fill in the Code field with the user-defined code of the variant.
  2. Fill in the Description field with the description of the variant.
  3. The Variant No. field is generated automatically according to the number-series setting in Catalog Settings.
  4. The Pictures Document ID field is filled automatically after you set the main picture of the variant.
  5. The Channel field is filled automatically after you assign a channel to the variant.
    1. On the ribbon, click the Channels button in Product Details.
    2. In the Code field, select the required channels.
  6. Variant management also allows you to block individual variants.

Manage product data

Like items, variants can be extended with product data. All data that you want to set for variants can be managed directly on the Item Variants page. The PIM ribbon tab contains all data types that you can assign to a variant, such as Product Features, Translations, Pictures, Documents, Media, Graphics, and CAD Drawings.

How to extend variants with additional fields

With Product Features, it is possible to extend variants with a new field that allows more combinations of variant values. On the Item Card, add Product Features with the Default Feature Type set to Variant. These features are then created in the feature list. After you add individual variant lines, new columns with variant value selections are automatically added based on the settings of the Product Features with the Default Feature Type set to Variant.
